Edwin Allen's Thomas breaks Penn Relays discus record

Danniel Thomas of Edwin Allen highlighted today‘s first day of the 118th Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia with a new record in the high schools girls discus throw with a personal best 51.02m effort.

Thomas who was competing for the final time as a school girl upstaged the field to beat Holmwood Technical’s Gleneve Grange who also had a personal best 50.33m while Thomas’ teammate Tara-sue Barnett was third.

The previous record was 49.28m set in 2009 by Aslynn Halvorson of Mathews High of Butler North Carolina. Despite the very cool conditions it was a bright day for the Jamaican girls who won four events- Kimberly Williams of Edwin Allen retaining her high jump title; Chanice Porter of Manchester High won her second long jump title in three years while Vere Technical’s Shardia Lawrence won the triple jump in her first trip to the Penn Relays.

On the track six schools led by Edwin Allen High qualified for the Championships of Americas 4x100m finals, one will run in the Large Schools consolation finals and four including former champions Holmwood Technical will contest the Small Schools finals.

Defending champions Edwin Allen, Holmwood Technical and Spalding are into the 4x800m finals while four teams are into the finals of the 4x400m.
